PRIME week at Gowling WLG is a highlight in their corporate responsibility calendar and PRIME 2019 was no exception. The firm welcomed ten bright and engaging local Birmingham year 12 students who spent the week shadowing trainees and legal apprentices, receiving hands on legal work experience from a variety of legal departments.
The work experience was interspersed with talks on both legal and non-legal careers giving the students an insight into the variety of legal roles that are available to aspiring lawyers as well as the many non-legal careers necessary to help run a law firm.
The students participated in business skills workshops to help develop the students’ commercial awareness, presentation skills, group work and their personal brand. These sessions were informative as well as engaging and interactive. The week was rounded off with a networking lunch and a pitch competition in which the students had to present their fictional law firms to a “client” in a bid in order to win that client’s business, with the winning firm walking away with a prize.
Feedback from the students at the end of the week was resoundingly positive and included:
“I think I have gained valuable experience that may help me in the future when it comes to deciding what field of law to go in to.”
“I’ve liked the responsibility that my buddy has given me, so I have been able to get immersed into the work. I liked the solicitor and barrister talk. I liked the networking lunch, as I was able to gain new networks.”
“My career goals have been more strengthened if anything because I now have a deeper understanding.”
All of our students responded that they “definitely would” recommend the PRIME week at Gowling WLG to others. Gowling WLG wish their PRIME students all the best in their A-Levels and future careers. They are confident they will go far!
